South China Normal University (SCNU) boasts a long history, which can be traced back to the former Teachers¡¯ College of Xiangqin University founded in August 1933. The seven decades after that has witnessed several changes of its names and locations. In March 1935, this earliest predecessor of SCNU was renamed Education College of Xiangqin University, and grew up into an independent college in July 1938---- Guangdong Provincial Education College which expanded into Guangdong Provincial Arts and Science College in September 1939. In October 1950, the name of the college was changed into Guangdong Arts and Science College

In June 1951, South China Normal College was founded with Guangdong Arts and Science College as the main body and Teachers¡¯ College of Sun Yat-sen University and the Education Department of the Private South China Union University as the new components. One year later the newly-founded college was reinforced by the intake of the Department of Russian Language of Nanfang University, the Education Departments of Lingnan and Guangxi Universities, and the Geography Department of Hunan University. The names of Hainan Teachers¡¯ College, Hainan Teachers¡¯ Training School and Teachers¡¯ College of Nanchang University were also on the intake list. In October 1970, the name of the institution was changed into Guangdong Normal University, only resumed to its previous one in November 1977. In October 1982, South China Normal College formally changed its name as South China Normal University. 

After a 70-year development, the present university has grown into a key university in Guangdong Province, with a comprehensive disciplinary setting of liberal arts, science, engineering, fine arts, history, economics, law, administration, physical education and education science. It is also designated as a member university of the Project 2ll, a national policy that offers more government financial support to the construction of 100 national key universities in 21st-century China.

SCNU comprises of 16 schools and eight departments with 47 undergraduate specialties, among which six, such as computer science etc., are known as the model disciplines in Guangdong Province. The eight schools include Humanities, Politics and Law, Education Science, Foreign Language and Culture, Economics and Administration, Physical Education Science, Life Science, Information and Photoelectricity Technology, Educational Information Technology, Physics&Telecommunication Engineering, International Culture, Communication, Nanhai College, Zengcheng Kangda College, College of Further Education, and School of Networking Education. The eight departments are Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Geography, Fine Arts, Music, and Tourism.

Its Graduate School includes 26 disciplines that are authorized to confer doctorate, 72 disciplines to confer mastership, and five post-doctoral research stations. The disciplines of Education and Psychology are listed as the national doctoral specialties that are listed as disciplines of First Class. Currently, there are three national key disciplines including developmental and educational psychology, optics and educational technology, six disciplines of key development in the ¡°Project 211¡±, four provincial key laboratories, one research base for humanities studies designated by the Ministry of Education, one research base for social sports studies nominated by the State Sports Bureau and one base for the studies of cultivating the talents in sports and arts. Other institutions include Open College, Guangdong Teachers¡¯ Training Center and Institution of Education Science Studies. 

Among the 1,110 full-time teachers, there are two academicians of the Academy of Science of China, 680 professors and associate professors, 360 doctorate and master¡¯s supervisors, and 14 experts who have won the provincial or national award for outstanding contributions. Furthermore, there are 13 disciplines, such as Chinese Language and Literature etc., which have been authorized by the Ministry of Education to confer the titles of professorship on their teachers.

Sticking to a scientific management of the university and to the integration of teacher training and academic research, SCNU has experienced a rapid development in the scale, level and capability of school running with a complete education system involved in all teaching levels of bachelorship, mastership, doctorate and post doctorate as well as a teaching and academic research system. Now the university has passed the evaluation of the ¡°Project 211¡± and the ¡°Ninth Five-year Plan¡± construction and the examination of the constructional projects of the ¡° Tenth Five-year Plan¡±, the university has built itself into a new comprehensive normal university with strong teaching and academic research force.

Aiming at the cultivation of teachers with high quality for middle schools and universities, and meeting the need of the economic and social development in China, the university has so far sent about 120,000 graduates to the society. There are currently about 1,500 postgraduates, 14,000 full-time undergraduates and three-year program students, 14,000 part-time adult students, 8,000 students in the College of Networking Education, and 160 students from Hong Kong, Macao and abroad.

Covering a total area of 23,500 square meters, the university¡¯s multi-function library possesses a collection of two million books including 180,000 Chinese and foreign language books, and 3,000 domestic and foreign periodicals. The main campus network has linked to the China education network and Internet, on which the teachers and students on the campus may exchange information with the outside world at a high speed.

The quiet and beautiful main campus covers an area of 1,220.2 mu (81.33 hectares) including 600,000-square-meter dorm buildings, offering a suitable and comfortable environment for study, research and living. In addition, a 1,029-mu (68.6 hectares) campus at the university town in Xiaoguwei, Panyu is under construction and expects the first 4,000- freshman in September 2004.

The university always attaches great importance to the international academic exchanges. So far, it has established regular cooperation relations with more than ten universities in USA, UK, Russia, Japan and so on. The international cooperation programs in academic exchange, student exchange, and joint school running increased year by year.

The university is now implementing the ¡° Tenth Five-year Plan¡± and the ¡°Tenth Five-year¡± project construction of the ¡°Project 211¡±, adjusting and optimizing the discipline construction, strengthening the reform in administration and management so that it can build itself into a university that ranks among top in the country in terms of the general level of school running and comprehensive capacities, a university known in the world and a university featured by its uniqueness, openness and comprehensiveness.
